On the fatigue of growing up: Social body and personal identity
€ 3.00What is the meaning and what is the origin of the metaphorical expression ‘the social body?’ A personal mind is endowed with senses and intelligence, but also participates in ‘common sense.’ Let us than ask ourselves what common sense is, and what its relationship to the social body is. What is a community, and what connects the community and the individuals that make it up? In answering that question we should bear in mind that the community precedes the individual and is its cradle, its ground of growth and nourishment, its ‘root.’ Thus subordinating the standpoint of the community to that of the free and responsible individual is a recent choice—and apparently, not at all an irreversible one—in human history. In our democracies, where ‘one head, one vote,’ this reversal should take place in the conscience of ever new individuals if our democracies are to stand or even progress. But this requires more and more people—all people if possible—achieving moral autonomy.
