What is the point of culture today?
€ 3.00Culture is perhaps the only real antibody we have left today to fight the breakdown in the feeling that we belong to a community. As great intellectuals like Arendt, Adorno or Horkheimer have taught us through their analyses of the processes that gradually led to the rise of various forms of Fascism, culture is in fact the only antidote left when our critical thinking weakens and we conform to prevailing ideologies. Critical thinking, however, does not only mean opposing conformism, it also requires the courage to think autonomously, without giving in to the global processes “producing culture” in exactly the same way commodities are produced. The situation is now such that we have to ask ourselves if the real problem today may be in understanding who is truly capable and brave enough to relinquish the trappings of fame to go against the tide and condemn the dominance of post-truths.

Michela Marzano (1970) completed her studies at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa and obtained a PhD in Philosophical research. She is professor of Moral Philosophy at the Université Paris Descartes and served as head of the social sciences department at the same university.
