After considering the myth as a remedy for death and sorrow, Severino will discuss the birth of the West, which he views as the most radical criticism of myth. He will address the Western tradition as the development of that remedy, which culminates in God, and is doomed to decline in its criticism by modernity. A modernity in which philosophical thought joins with the technical and scientific apparatus upon which the world rests and which today represents the genuine form of globalization, since technology is the pursuit of the indefinite growth of one’s power. In his talk, Professor Severino will try to expand our perspectives on identity beyond the West and to the whole planet.
